About Poor Boy Pallet

Poor Boy Pallet is owned and operated by Gary and Dennis Macklin, brothers who have over 60 years of combined experience building and servicing pallets at our South Jersey facility. Their working knowledge and understanding of pallets, combined with their desire to go beyond their customer's needs, has caused the business to grow rapidly.

I worked with my father before I was a teenager. Of course, at that time I only worked for cheesesteaks!

It was in those years working with my father that I learned the value of hard work and getting the job done.

In 1989, I enlisted in the Navy for 4 years. After the Navy, I worked a couple of odd jobs before going to school for computers. After a brief career in the computer industry, I realized it wasn't the kind of work I wanted to be doing. I returned to work with my father, who was working part-time in the pallet business. In 1998, I started my own business.

In 2007, my brother Dennis and I partnered to create the company we are today.

I have been married for 20 years and have two daughters, one of which is a Marine. My other daughter is married to a service member in the Air Force, and has the job of raising my four grandchildren.

It all started in 1964, when my mother and father... just kidding!

I started working with pallets when I was around 11 years old. My father and I would do cleanup for my uncle's company. Growing up, I worked for different pallet companies doing every job available, ranging from repairs to forklift operator to truck driver to operating and maintaining a tub grinder. Over time, I stepped away from the pallet industry and began working in construction. For 15 years, I operated heavy equipment and made it my mission to learn how to operate as many different kinds of equipment as I could. In fact, I enjoyed working with the equipment so much that when I applied for a job I wrote "I was like a kid in his sand box playing with his Tonka toys." I didn't get the job, but I wasn't discouraged.

When Gary first started his company, I helped from time to time with electric and plumbing on the side. I even helped repair pallets occasionally. When Gary approached me to be his partner, I was hesitant. However, when I saw how hard Gary was working to make his company work, I knew it was time. In 2007, we partnered together, and the rest is history.

I have been happily married for 16 years, sharing 10 kids and 11 grandchildren with my wife, Beth.
